چکیده

sweet sorghum that is adapted to the country hot and dry climatic condition, was selected as a raw material for biofuel and biogas production. bioethanol is produced from sweet sorghum stalks and grains and biogas is produced from its byproducts. the purpose of this study was to plant sweet sorghum irrigated with different qualities of water in order to produce biofuels. this experiment was conducted at the east wastewater treatment plant of isfahan water and waste water company in 1992. the results showed maximum biomass (87 t/ha) was produced in treatments irrigated with raw and waste water and minimum biomass (66 t/ha) was produced with agricultural water. although total coliform in raw and waster was 1.2×10^8 and 1.9×10^4, respectively but it was less than 1×10^2 in sweet sorghum leaves, stems and grains. 6372 l of bioethanol was produced from 1 ha of sweet sorghum. from its byproducts, 15435 cubic meter of cng was produced which can be used in gas vehicles. in addition 43218 kwh electricity, 36994 mega calorie heat, and 16t of organic fertilizer were produced. electricity could be sold to national grid electricity and heat could be used in bioethanol plants and the organic fertilizer could be used in agriculture.

Phenotypic and molecular characterization of sweet sorghum accessions for bioenergy production

Sweet sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] is a type of cultivated sorghum characterized by the accumulation of high levels of sugar in the stems and high biomass accumulation, making this crop an important feedstock for bioenergy production. Sweet sorghum breeding programs that focus on bioenergy have two main goals: to improve quantity and quality of sugars in the juicy stem and to increase ...

Production of bioenergy and biochemicals from industrial and agricultural wastewater.

The building of a sustainable society will require reduction of dependency on fossil fuels and lowering of the amount of pollution that is generated. Wastewater treatment is an area in which these two goals can be addressed simultaneously. As a result, there has been a paradigm shift recently, from disposing of waste to using it. There are several biological processing strategies that produce b...

Gaseous Biofuels Production from Sweet Sorghum and Olive Pulp

Biomass from energy crops and agroindustrial wastes can be biologically converted to liquid or gaseous fuels, such as ethanol, methanol, methane and hydrogen, which was recently characterized as the fuel of the future. Hydrogen is a clean and environmentally friendly fuel, which produces water instead of greenhouse gases when combusted. It can be produced by renewable raw materials, such as org...

Fermentation kinetics and ethanol production from different sweet sorghum varieties

In recent years bioethanol fuels derived from agricultural biomass resources or waste have been considered the cleanest liquid fuel alternative to fossil fuels. Ethanol consumption is expected to reach 11.2 billion gallons by 2012. Sweet sorghum, grown in the Southeast and Midwest states in US, contains 14%-20% fermentable sugar and is an ideal feedstock, owing to its ease of fermentation by ye...

Production of bioethanol from sweet sorghum: A review

The consumption of bioethanol as biofule may reduce greenhouse gases, gasoline imports. Also it can be replaced with lead or MTBE (Methyl tert-butyl ether) that are air and underground water pollutants, respectively. Plants are the best choice for meeting the projected bioethanol demands. For this scope, a comparative analysis of the technological options using different feedstocks should be pe...

Applications of microalgal biofilms for wastewater treatment and bioenergy production

BACKGROUND Microalgae have shown clear advantages for the production of biofuels compared with energy crops. Apart from their high growth rates and substantial lipid/triacylglycerol yields, microalgae can grow in wastewaters (animal, municipal and mining wastewaters) efficiently removing their primary nutrients (C, N, and P), heavy metals and micropollutants, and they do not compete with crops ...
